Clean living in a chaotic world

Clean living in a chaotic world

One of the ways I try to live a cleaner, low-tox life is by consciously managing my intake of media. This past week, I didn't do a very good job of that.

If I had to give a neutral word for the current vibe I'm feeling as a U.S. citizen, it's dismantling. Our systems and institutions are rapidly changing course, breaking down, being rebuilt, and changing again.

In the natural world, we would call this process catabolic. For example, when we lift heavy weights, our muscle tissue breaks down so it can rebuild. An organism that dies is broken down and is recycled into new life.

While there is much we do not control as individuals, we can always control our response to the environment we inhabit. It helps me to know that the entire history of life on this planet has been a process of building, dismantling, and rebuilding.

Our individual lives are an integral part of the process.

We can grieve or celebrate any set of circumstances, and as we move through our emotions, we must choose our next step forward, informed by those emotions and the values they reflect.

So when it comes to those intimate decisions about the things we bring into our homes, put on our bodies, and share with our loved ones I have never felt more strongly that I want these decisions to be a reflection of my values:

  • to keep our bodies safe from harm
  • to heal and protect the environment we inhabit
  • to support people and businesses who share these values

Some practical ways I'm living these values include:

  • Buying less stuff, especially plastic
  • Buying less from companies that do harm
  • Using resources mindfully and with gratitude
  • Choosing vendors who prioritize human health over profit

Of course, earth + apple is here to make some of these decisions a little easier for you, whether it's your cleaning supplies, or a plastic-free cup of tea. I am always so grateful to receive your order and I celebrate each of the wonderful selections you've made. I appreciate the invitation to have a spot in your inbox, and to share a passion for clean living made simple, without fear or judgement.
